Furry Friends – Monkeys -Bonnet Macaques (Terrace Residents)

Our furry friends, monkey visitors made a regular routine to
visit our premises and garden every day or week. In addition to this, there is
a Goddess Rajarajeshwari temple just opposite to the apartments, where there are
abundant fruit-bearing trees like tamarind, mango, Dattatreya trees, etc. Most
of the trees attract many birds and these monkeys.
Gradually, the monkeys discovered a way towards the terrace
of the apartment buildings situated on the 6th or 7th floor. As the Doors of the
terraces are constantly opened the monkeys began to visit them quite often and one
day they decided to settle down on the terrace. One terrace of an apartment building
is connected to another terrace of an apartment building through a bridge. The
bridge is easy connectivity for the monkeys to commute from one building to
another.
Every Now and Then, I used to visit the terrace on the 8th floor of the apartment as the sight of enormous Chamundi hills from the terrace
view was spectacular during the time of sunrise and the ariel view of the locality. There I used to greet the
monkey crew, or sometimes on the neighboring building terrace. At times, I
used to see them all asleep cuddled up together on the staircase leading to the
terrace. Once I was trying to click a snap at the half-drowsy monkey crew. one
adult became alert and made a charge towards me. To my surprise, I acted serenely
and assured them that I will not harm them. That monkey stopped halfway and
went back to his mates. I walked on still surprised by my attitude.
Occasionally, I used to offer some bananas to them. Hence,
they seem to know me and as soon as I reach the terrace in the mornings, they expect
the same. I enjoyed the beauty of the Hills as well as the peaceful monkeys. Sometimes
I used to observe the monkey family at the neighboring apartment terrace. Most
of the time, I see them grooming. That is one of adults' early morning activities.
The younger ones go for an adventure by mounting from one coconut tree to
another, bringing a security guard’s attention to it. Hence the guards carry a
toy gun with loud bullet sounds to scare them temporarily.
No human can prevent them from settling down there. The
security guards, presidents, and other residents of the apartment buildings became
very perturbed on how to get rid of the monkeys from the terrace. The bursting of crackers
and the toy guns terrified them only for a temporary phase. At the end of the day,
the monkeys come back after their chores and settle down on the terrace.
