The other exciting creature is the female cat GEM (green-eyed monster). She lives permanently in the apartment premises sometimes with her mates like Ginger, Spotty, etc. She had many litters of kittens of whom male kittens get stolen and female ones grow up and continue to live in the apartments or sometimes wander away. She lives like a queen and drives away other stray cats away.

A Sleepy Gem

Gem in hiding

During my walks in the wee hours of the morning, I see her in hunting mode or in a sleepy mood. Sometimes she is hiding around some shrubs or corner ready to make an ambush attack on a pigeon or squirrel who passes by.

Gem in hiding

She feeds on Rock pigeons who dwell on these buildings. Sometimes feeds on rats and squirrels. However, I do feed her some biscuits sometimes. But like a cat, she is not too friendly. I was worried when the frenzy Boxer or Biscuit enter the premises and encounter her. I expected a fight between the two.  She arched her back eager for a fight to defend herself and her kittens. But to my surprise, the dogs ducked away submissively without a fight. I was stunned by the behavior of the dogs.

Gem with her kittens

Occasionally, whenever she has a litter of kittens. I somehow find out the hiding spot wherever she has hidden her kittens. Most of the time in some corner of the garden or deep windowsill of the ground floor. Sometimes her kittens give away the hiding place by their soft purring sounds.

Mercury

Jade

She had many litters of kittens. Jade and Mercury are most popular around the apartment. They resemble their mother a lot. Jade is grey like her mother with green eyes and is taller. Mercury is small structured but a bit dark grey with yellow eyes.

Gem was never a careless mother. Once the whole apartment could hear desperate sounds of meowing of a kitten in the lobby of the building for some hours. I went and tried to console the kitten and even tried to feed it with diluted cow’s milk. But it spat it out in disgust and become more inconsolable. With no hopes, I left it at the garden corner of the lobby. A few minutes later, the kitten had disappeared from the spot and I realized that Gem had come and taken her away. Perhaps she was watching me console and feed it from her hideout.
