Every time I make a trip to Mysuru from Bengaluru, I always
find at least 2-3 monkeys (Bonnet Macaques) moving from house to
another house or climbing from one tree to another at least in one of the localities in
Mysuru. Ever since Bengaluru city had extended rapidly, there was hardly any sight of these mammals in that busy city.
Once, while going around for a walk, enjoying the sunrise, and exploring
some flowering plants in the garden, I suddenly came across an adult monkey peacefully
sitting on the pathway. I stopped to gaze at it. My neighbor, a middle-aged man,
another early morning walker, whispered to me that it will not hurt
anyone. I shrugged and went on for the
walk. Suddenly, at one corner of the premises, I could sight a troop of about
20 monkeys emerge on the huge wall compound making their way into the lawn,
garden, and basement. Most of them were youngsters. In a jiffy, they
scared the cat (Gem) and drove her into the basement. 4-5 Adults both males and females
sat on the compound. 2 Females had infants in their arms. The infants looked
around curiously at the surroundings and moved a bit to explore the place, but the
parents thwarted them. Some of the youngsters had already discovered the sprinkler
had been turned on the lawn. Immediately, they went over to have a splash and drink some cool
water.
Very soon, the security guard was alerted. He came out on
the pathway waving the wooden rod in his hands towards the lawn. The younger
monkeys upon seeing him mounted the huge wall. A few minutes later, one of them
found a tender coconut on the coconut tree, made a hole in it to savor the coconut
water from it. Other ones found some fruits from a creeper plant growing on the compound wall. It took some time for the guard to drive away all the monkeys. He was sterner
on the youngsters than on the adults.
The same monkey troop made frequent visits to our garden on
regular basis, especially during the summer season. There were times when there
was no security guard to check on them and hence, they had a blissful time on
the lawn and mounting the coconut trees. Some of them even took naps on the
compound wall.

They were not bothered by human presence unless they were threatened.
Subsequently, I had time to click some snaps of them playing on the lawn or mounting trees, or on
the compound. It was fun to watch them roll over and play on the lawn or relax on
top of parked cars.
Once or twice, they went berserk making too much noise that
the guard or some human had to intervene or else they are very calm and
composed feeding on fruits, coconut, or some food which apartment people would offer.
